About

Gassane Tailors

When someone wears a Gassane designed custom-made suit they feel a sense pride knowing that the high quality garment then have investing in will last for many years to come. This is a frequently heard comment from the clientele at Gassane Tailors, Inc. Why are these satisfied customers continuing to purchase custom-designed clothes from the small, quaint tailoring shop in Northwest Austin, Texas? Because of the one-on-one personal service and timeless designs created by Master Tailor, Mr. Ghassan "Gus" Karim.

Mr, Karim knew he was destined to become a tailor when he fell in love with a suit his father had made for him when he was only ten years old. By the time he twelve, Mr. Karim was hard at work in his father's tailor store in Tripoli, Lebanon. The love of the cloth can be traced back to his family tree. The Karim family name is very well-known politically and religiously in Syria and Lebanon. Sheik Yasin of Syria established the Karim name in the village of Bait Sheik Younes. The family heritage can be traced back nine generations. Some of the most prominent names were Sheik Radwain, Sheik Joseph, Sheik Moses and Prince M. Ezach Alantanoki, the Governor of Ledachia. A book on the Karim's heritage was written in 1992 by Dr. A-Lyounes, a famous political writer and current editor of newspapers in Syria and South America.

After eight years of hard training with his father's shop, Mr. Karim obtained the status of Master Tailor. After his father died in 1961, Mr. Karim took ove rthe shop for eight years and made it prosper even more than before. In 1969, Mr. Karim decided to give the business to his brother and moved to New York to help a friend establish a business in the United States. It only took a few months of snow and below freezing temperaturs to convince Mr. Karim to visit a friend in Austin, Texas. That visit has lasted twenty-six years.

Mr. Karim's philosophy is that "you have to create yourself - you cannot use other people's ideas and succeed". He opened his first store in dowtown Austin on Congress Avenue, only blocks from the State capitol. Even though there was a language problem for him at first (it took him only three years to master the English language), his high quality workmanship and trustworthy reputation began to attract more and more prominent customers. President Lyndon B. Johnson's press secretary had inquired about alterations for the President. After approving the quality of Mr. Karim's work the President made an appointment and came into the shop to be fitted for a custom-made sport coat. Mr. Karim, through an interpreter, began to measure the President and show him fabric samples. The President inquired how long it would take and jokingly asked if he could have it the next day. Not understanding what the President had said and not waiting for the interpreter, Mr. Karim quickly agreed with him, "yes, yes Mr. President." After the prominent party left, the interpreter asked, "Do you know what you have done?1? You agreed to make a coat for the President in 24 hours!! Why didn't you tell him NO!?" Mr. Karim said "I cannot tell the President No". So the famous last words of his interpreter were "I'm quitting!!" Left without an interpreter at 4:30pm and a sports coat needing to be made from scratch, he rolled up his sleeves and started cutting cloth. The next day, a Senior staff member dropped by the shop to let Mr. Karim know that the President did not expext to have his coat that day, he had only been joking. A weary, bleary eyed Mr. Karim said, "One moment please." as he sewed on the last button. As he handed over the sport coat he told the staff member to thank the President for his business. Later, President Johnson sent Mr. Karim an autographed picture along with a thank you note and a copy of his book. Refer to the rest of our website for more pictures, letters and press releases referring to Mr. Karim's prominent clientele, including attorneys, medical physicians, academic directors from the University of Texas, banking executives, senators, representatives and Presidents.
